Benchmarking and performance tracking of the Australian food system
This research will develop a framework to assess the performance of food system components in relation to societal goals and inform the status of the current Australian food system.
Our research
This research will co-develop an indicator framework to monitor the state and trends of nutritional, economic, social, and environmental components of the food system. It will establish a baseline of the Australian food system and examine changes occurring in various food system components over time.
Benefits of our research
The indicator framework will provide evidence-based insights into which specific areas of the food system are performing well (best practices) and which areas may need urgent improvement. The goal of this research is to encourage food system stakeholders to come together to discuss and find potential pathways to transform contemporary food systems to be more sustainable, equitable, resilient, and productive.
Why are we doing this research?
Australian food systems are dynamic, complex, and multifaceted. Decision-makers need evidence-based information on the current state of food systems to make informed decisions. Benchmarking and performance tracking will provide this information by monitoring the rate of progress of food systems towards the envisioned future.
The Benchmarking and performance tracking of the Australian food system project is funded by CSIRO and The University of Queensland.
