Understanding the Australian food system using a system approach
This research explores the complex connections between different elements of Australia’s food system.
Our research
Our food system is like a giant puzzle and understanding how the pieces fit together is the key to making it better. This evidence-based study will use data to map how elements of the food system are connected. The study uses network analysis, one of the most prominent tools that can be used to model complex systems, to map the connections.
Benefit of our research
Understanding how different aspects of the food system are connected allows us to see how changes in one part of the system can impact on other parts of the system. We can also better understand the potential impacts on the environment, society, and nutrition resulting from alterations in various food system elements. For example, if there is a shift in the available workforce, it can influence how farms operate and the use of technology.
By examining the evolution of these connections over time, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the system. This analysis helps us to anticipate both positive and negative outcomes and assess the impact of interventions, such as new policies or innovations, on the food system.
Why are we doing this research?
In our pursuit of enhanced resource efficiency and affordable food, industrial food systems have achieved remarkable milestones. However, this success has come at a toll on certain communities and the environment. The heavy reliance on non-renewable resources and agricultural chemical inputs has resulted in multiple issues, including water degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and soil fertility decline.
Furthermore, changes to food supply chain and socio-economic circumstances of consumers have led to unfavourable nutritional and health consequences. This highlights the imperative to transform the food system to be more nutritious and sustainable. To undertake this transformation, a nuanced comprehension of the intricate complexities within the food system is crucial.
The Understanding the Australian food system using a system approach project is funded by CSIRO and The University of Queensland.
